Life is heavy. Nobody gets a hall pass on that. You carry stress about jobs, money, kids, and relationships. It wears you down. You carry guilt and shame from choices you’ve made, or maybe from stuff that was done to you, and it just piles on. And then there’s fear: fear of failing, fear of being found out, fear of what’s coming next. Top it off with heartbreak, and you’ve got the recipe for feeling like you’re barely hanging on.
Jesus knew that. That’s why He didn’t say, “Hey, if life ever happens to feel a little heavy, maybe come check me out.” He said, “No.. He said when. When you’re weary. When you’re burdened. That’s when I want you to come to me. And here’s what I’ll do, I’ll give you rest.”
That’s not some religious platitude you hang on a wall. It’s not a Hallmark card. It’s a promise from the Son of God who knows exactly what it feels like to be human.
And that’s what this journey is about: actually leaning into that promise. Not just nodding your head on Sunday and then going right back to carrying the same junk by yourself on Monday. My hope is that as we walk through this, you don’t just know that Jesus can make your load lighter, you actually experience Him doing it. Because that’s what He does.
Day 1: The Stronger Ox
Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus never promised to erase responsibility. He didn’t say, “Follow me and life gets easy.” He said, “Follow me and you won’t have to do it by yourself.” That’s a huge difference.
It’s like back in the day when farmers would train up oxen. They’d take the little, weaker one and strap it next to the big, strong one. The little ox had to walk. He had to show up. But he wasn’t carrying the load. The strong one was. That’s exactly what Jesus is saying: “I’ll take the weight. You just stick close to me.”
That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom. Weakness is me trying to flex and white-knuckle my way through life, pretending I’ve got it when I don’t. Wisdom is saying, “I can’t carry this alone. Jesus, I need you.”
And hear this, Jesus isn’t standing back like some slave driver with a whip barking orders. He’s not waiting for you to mess up so He can crack you across the back. No. He’s shoulder-to-shoulder with you, leaning into the yoke, taking the brunt of the weight, saying, “I’ve got you. Just walk with me.”
That’s the invitation. That’s the promise. And that’s how the impossible becomes possible. Not because you got stronger, but because you’re walking with the Strong One.
Application:
Where are you still trying to carry the full load yourself? Write down one area of life—family, work, finances, addiction, whatever—where you need to let Jesus pull with you.
Prayer:
“Jesus, I’m tired of trying to drag this thing on my own. Thank You for inviting me into Your rest. Today, I hand You the harness, and I’ll walk step for step with You.”
Day 2: A Rest That Works
Scripture: Hebrews 4:9–11
Rest in Jesus doesn’t mean you get to tap out of life. It doesn’t mean you quit your job, ignore your family, or curl up in bed and say, “Well, Jesus has it, so I don’t have to.” No. Rest in Jesus means you’re still in the game, but you’re not running on your own fuel anymore. You’re living with His strength instead of yours.
The Pharisees back in Jesus’ day, man, they were experts at piling on rules, shame, and performance. It was like, “Do more. Try harder. Be better. And maybe God won’t be mad at you.” That’s crushing. And some of us still carry that around, right? The feeling that God is standing there with His arms crossed, waiting for you to blow it. But Jesus steps into the middle of that and says, “I’m not here to crush you. I’m here to lift you.”
And listen, rest doesn’t mean lazy. It doesn’t mean throwing your hands up and doing nothing. It means learning to let Him do the heavy lifting while you faithfully walk in step with Him. It’s like carrying a couch with your buddy, except Jesus isn’t just on the other side of the couch; He’s the one carrying most of the weight. You’ve still got your hands on it, but He’s the reason it’s not breaking your back.
That’s what He’s offering: rest that doesn’t come from escaping life, but from walking through life with Him.
Application:
Ask yourself: Am I resting in Christ, or am I just exhausting myself with religious busywork? This week, cut out one unnecessary “I have to” in your faith and replace it with simply sitting with Jesus—reading, praying, or even just being quiet before Him.
Prayer:
“Lord, I confess I’ve made faith harder than it should be. Teach me what real rest looks like—not quitting, not coasting—but trusting You with every step.”
Day 3: Carried Not Crushed
Scripture: Philippians 2:8
Jesus didn’t just show up and say, “Hey, I’ll give you a hand.” He proved it. He carried the heaviest load we could never carry, sin, shame, death, all of it, on His shoulders at the cross. Think about that. The stuff that would’ve crushed us, the weight we were never strong enough to hold, He picked it up and bore it. And He didn’t just lift a finger. He gave His whole life.
That’s why we can trust Him with everything else. If He carried your eternity, you don’t have to wonder if He can handle your today. If He dealt with death, He can deal with your anxiety. If He shouldered the cross, He can shoulder your marriage, your addiction, your fear, your future.
The cross wasn’t Jesus saying, “I’ll chip in a little.” The cross was Jesus saying, “I’ve got it. All of it.”
And if He’s already proven He can carry the biggest thing, then you can hand Him the smaller things too.
Application:
Think about the heaviest weight you’ve carried recently. Now picture Jesus shouldering that same weight on the cross. Thank Him out loud for carrying what you never could.
Prayer:
“Jesus, thank You for carrying the heaviest load, the one that should’ve been mine. Help me remember every day that if You’ve carried my sin and death, You can carry my stress and pain too.”
I think we’ve got it backward sometimes. We think, “If I’m strong enough, I can handle it.” But that’s not how it works. Life doesn’t get lighter because you’ve got muscles or willpower or grit. Life gets lighter because Jesus is strong enough.
He’s not sitting in heaven tapping His watch, waiting for you to prove you can handle it. No, He’s waiting for you to take His hand, to step alongside Him, to say, “I trust You.” That’s the invitation. You’re not meant to drag this life on your own. You weren’t wired to shoulder every fear, every worry, every heartbreak solo.
Walk with Him. Lean into Him. Let Him carry the weight that’s crushing your shoulders. And here’s the beautiful, crazy part: when you do, the impossible becomes possible. Mountains that looked unmoving start to shift. Storms that seemed relentless start to calm. Not because the load disappeared… but because you weren’t carrying it alone.
And isn’t that wild? The God of the universe is right there, walking shoulder to shoulder, making the unbearable… doable. Making the heavy… light. Making the impossible… yours to face with courage.
